Duty Ranger for Wey & Arun Canal Trust (Full-Time)

Application deadline extended to January 31st

Requirements:

The Duty Ranger will play a key part in the practical work of restoring and maintaining the Wey & Arun Canal. This exciting volunteer-led project is gaining momentum; the operational section of the canal is 5km long and major construction work is in progress or being planned on multiple sites.

We are looking for a person with significant experience of canal restoration, maintenance and dredging together with knowledge of construction techniques and requirements.

An essential requirement is that the person must be able to work on his/her own initiative, be able to work with volunteers and have good verbal communication skills.

Experience of site management and team leadership would be extremely useful. Basic mechanical skills are needed with specific skills/qualifications in chainsaw operation and in operating excavators, dumper trucks, Land Rovers and trailers.

The person must be able to specify, source, order and supervise delivery of equipment and materials, also control budgets for specific projects and activities.

The person should ideally have skills in conservation and forestry and should have knowledge of local authority planning requirements and conditions.

Experience in preparing risk assessments, with knowledge of Health & Safety regulations and best practice (including lone worker requirements) is highly desirable.

While the person will largely be responsible for managing his / her own time, this will include following instructions / directions from more than one of the Trust’s managers. The ability to report back to those managers concisely and in a timely manner is essential.

This is a full-time role on a permanent basis, some weekend work is likely to be required. Generally the successful applicant will have some flexibility to choose his/her own working times. The role will be based at a location central to the canal route.

We offer a competitive salary package. Training will be arranged as required.

If you are interested in the role or for an informal discussion, please contact Sally Schupke (sas@weyandarun.co.uk) by Friday 12th January 2018 at the latest.
