A new look newsletter this month which we hope you will like. Read on for exciting news about desilting work on the Dunsfold Park section and an opportunity for members to walk along the restored stretch on the morning of our April Meeting.

We have issued a press release to highlight the work completed to create a  navigable unobstructed wide and deep channel, for nearly 2km from Fast Bridge down to Tickner’s Heath. The full story and details about  the previous work by our volunteers on this section can be read in the next Wey South.

Spring Meeting Walk 

Members can join us for a guided walk along the recently completed section of canal inside Dunsfold Park.  As this section is on private land and not open to the public currently, this is a great opportunity to explore this section of the canal.

Board Announcements

Sally Schupke will retire as our Chairman at the end of April and our current Vice-Chairman Margaret Darvill has put her name forward as Interim Chairman. The appointment of Sally’s successor will be confirmed at the May meeting of our Board.

Robin Hirsch took up the role of Finance Director from 1st February, replacing Julian Morgan who was appointed to the job (initially jointly with John Talbot) in 2017. Julian will assist Robin with Finance matters, including the preparation of our statutory accounts for 2023, during a handover period and will retain Board responsibility for IT and Publications.

Spring Meeting 

Our Spring Meeting is at Pulborough Village Hall, Swan View, Lower Street, Pulborough, West Sussex RH20 2BF, starting at 2.30pm on Saturday 20th April 2024.
All members are welcome and this is an informal meeting with updates on projects and plans for 2024 as well as a presentation on fundraising. There will be a refreshment
break and the meeting will finish by 5pm at the latest.

The Poddle

This years Poddle is on Sunday 2nd June and is the Trust's most important fundraising event.  We are going to walk from the Snoxhall Community Centre to the Arbuthnot Hall at Shamley Green where snacks and hot and cold drinks will be available returning in the afternoon.  The walk route includes the recently restored Birtley section. 

Refreshment stops will be provided at Run Common and Smithwood Common.

Bonfire Hanger funding award

We are delighted to report that we are to be given £45,700 towards Bonfire Hanger towpath upgrades from Waverley Borough Council through the Community Infrastructure Levy. 

Planning for this work is now underway and it is expected to complete the work this summer. 

Easter and Cream Tea Cruises

Our Easter boat cruises which take place on the 29th, 30th, 31st March and 1st April are filling up fast but there are still spaces available. The boat departs from The Wharf next to The Onslow Arms in Loxwood RH14 0RD where there is plenty of parking.  

We are also operating our cream tea cruises on Friday 26th April, Friday 2nd May and Friday 10th May. 

Our Canal Centre will be open to welcome you where you can find a wealth of information about the canal and its history as well as maps and walking guides.

Arun Rally

The Arun Rally for small boats will take place on June 23rd from 2.15pm onwards.  Launching will be from Pulborough and Stopham with Pallingham as the furthest point north.
