April Headlines

The most important event this month is the Spring Meeting on 20th April (see below).  A presentation on the strategy for the restoration projects over the next few years will be shared. This will provide a vital insight into the work to be undertaken in the near future along with key challenges including fundraising.

Spring Meeting Reminder

Our Spring Meeting is at Pulborough Village Hall, Swan View, Lower Street, Pulborough, West Sussex RH20 2BF, starting at 2.30pm on Saturday 20th April 2024.
All members are welcome and this is an informal meeting with updates on projects and plans for 2024 as well as a presentation on fundraising. There will be a refreshment
break and the meeting will finish by 5pm at the latest.

Easter Cruises and the return of the bunny !

The Easter Cruises were a great success with a total of 11 trips over the 4 days.  We carried 225 adults and 72 children.  The staring role was played by the return of the Easter Bunny - very much appreciated by everyone!!

There are 3 Cream Tea Cruises coming up on the following dates and available for booking on our website.

Spring Wildlife

It is a great time to be outdoors (between the rain showers!) and spot some amazing wildlife.   Julian Morgan photographed a Buzzard above the Loxwood Canal centre at the end of March and other great photos, including a rare sighting of a Cormorant in Shalford, can be viewed on our website.

The Poddle

This year's Poddle is on Sunday 2nd June and is the Trust's most important fundraising event.  We are going to walk from the Snoxhall Community Centre in Cranleigh to the Arbuthnot Hall at Shamley Green (where snacks and hot and cold drinks will be available) returning in the afternoon.  The walk route includes the recently restored Birtley section.

Refreshment stops will be provided at Run Common and Smithwood Common.

Working Parties

The various working parties have been busy despite the rather less than clement weather.  Nick Baxter and his hedgelaying team have completed their target of 150 metres opposite the Drungewick Slipway.

Some high level trimming has taken place along the Wey- South Path overlooking the new Birtley Bridges.

At the Loxwood Canal Centre our volunteers have built a new retaining wall to replace rotten sleepers and introduced a lot of new top soil ready for planting with wildlife friendly plants.

Arun Rally

Our annual Wey and Arun Small Boat Rally is taking place this year on Sunday June 23rd on the upper stretches of the beautiful River Arun. We will launch from Pulborough at 14:15 or from the old bridge at Stopham at 14:45.  There will be a leisurely paddle through the stunning Sussex countryside up to the tidal limit at Pallingham  -  the entry-point into the Wey & Arun Canal system.

The rally is free to enter for all canoeists, kayakers, paddle-boarders and small boaters. For those who wish to make a voluntary contribution, marshals will have donation boxes and card machines. All donations will go towards restoring  'London's Lost Route to the Sea'.
