The Poddle

The day of the Poddle was one of the sunniest and hottest days we have this year.  We had 119 walkers and we hope to have raised £10,000 Many thank to all the volunteers who spent the day signing people in and out and those who prepared the lunch as well as clearing up afterwards.  Chris Tavener should be commended  for planning   a lovely walk and for the signmarkers, Paul Tilley and Jim Nunn, as well as the people who marshalled and did the refreshments.  A great day was had by all.

Working Party News

The Eric Walker Group returned to Birtley to seal a leak between the bridges.  This enormous tree stump had to be pulled out of the bank before the Terraseal membrane was laid and then covered in clay.

The Dredger Group continue to be busy clearing the silt build-up south of Baldwin's Knob Lock.  in places the depth is only 0.3m as opposed to a normal depth of 1.3m.  Once the soil has drained it shrinks to about half its size and will support a healthy plant population.

Lyn Nash Retires

After 13 years as our Loxwood Canal Centre Manager, Lyn Nash has retired. She has been involved with the canal since the 1990s and spent much time at the canal centre taking bookings, selling merchandise and catering and crewing on trips. We are delighted that she will continue to crew and remain a director of our trading arm

Spring Wildlife

Michael Edwards took this great picture of a Grey Heron on 16th April between the Drungewick Slipway and Baldwin's Knob Lock.

Arun Rally

Our annual Wey and Arun Small Boat Rally is taking place this year on Sunday June 23rd on the upper stretches of the beautiful River Arun. We will launch from Pulborough at 14:15 or from the old bridge at Stopham at 14:45.  There will be a leisurely paddle through the stunning Sussex countryside up to the tidal limit at Pallingham  -  the entry-point into the Wey & Arun Canal system.

The rally is free to enter for all canoeists, kayakers, paddle-boarders and small boaters. For those who wish to make a voluntary contribution, marshals will have donation boxes and card machines. All donations will go towards restoring  'London's Lost Route to the Sea'.
