Working Party News

The hedge laying team have been bust on the long stretch upstream of Drungewick aqueduct using cell grown hawthorns.  Over 330 stakes were used and more needed!

The Dredger Group have had to repair some hydraulic leaks on Pauline along with other maintenance tasks. Assistance is always welcome so contact Charlie Coxwell if you would like to help.

Restoration of both parapets of the Devil's Hole Lock bridge is now complete and very fine it looks too.

The new back pump for Baldwin's Knob Lock is now on site and ready for installation by the contractor.

Rooks Hil

This project extends the canal restoration south from the Birtley Bridges section Bramley which was completed in 2023.  This stretch of canal has been filled in so we have to create a new cut and build a bridge to carry the Greensand Way over the canal.  Construction of the new bridge will start this summer once we have discharged the planning conditions.

Preparatory work starts this month to establish a site compound and erect tree fencing with assistance from the Newbury Group led by our own Bill Nicholson.

Cost estimates for the whole project are being developed to be followed by a major fundraising appeal.

Roger Beazer has been responsible for the MDV for the last 9 years.  During that time, he has taken it to over 100 fetes, craft fairs, and diverse other venues.  He has been a key source of new members -  well in excess of a hundred.  We are extremely grateful for his sterling efforts on behalf of the Trust.  Many many thanks, Roger.

Phil Short has now taken over responsibility for the MDV which starts the summer season on Saturday 10th May at Dunsfold Village Fete.  We plan to attend 13 weekend events this year promoting such projects as Rooks Hill and Tickners Heath with the aim of attracting new members to the Trust.  Support for the MCV Team at these events is always welcome.

Spring Wildlife

How often does one see a Tree Creeper even when a birdsong app is identifying them nearby?  Martin Edser saw this one near Baldwin's Knob Lock.

What have you seen and photographed recently? If you send a photo to Dave Verrall at:      dave.verrall@weyarun.org.uk he can upload it to the Wildlife Photo section on the website.
