Rooks Hill

Some limited activity has been completed on site to establish a compound and erect Tree Protection fencing. Construction will only start when we have discharged our planning conditions.

We will launch an appeal for the first phase of work to include construction of the Rooks Hill bridge at our upcoming Spring Meeting to be followed by a Press Release to publicise.   We will include details of how to donate to our appeal in our May newsletter.

Working Party News

The Hedgelaying Team have now completed their winter season with a record 240 metres laid at Drungewick.  They have built a hibernaculum for grass snakes using cut reed.

Work has started on the Rye Farm Project to divert the bridleway from the land owner's drive to alongside the canal. This is a significant construction project requiring bulk bags of dry-mix concrete, crushed concrete hardcore and a geogrid membrane before the finished surface can be laid.  The photo gives an idea of the work involved.

The Dredger Team have been busy upgrading Pauline with an iDig system to enable the operator to have real-time bucket positioning. This will reduce the risk of damage to the canal's puddling clay bed.

Mobile Display Vehicle

The Mobile Display Vehicle will be visiting Dunsfold Fete on 10th May and Bramley Fete on 17th May.

Spring Wildlife

This unusual visitor to the canal was spotted by Julie Haddon in the vicinity of Lordings Lock on 1st April.  Koalas are normally pretty lethargic and spend much of their life stoned as a result of their diet of mildly narcotic eucalyptus leaves.  However, this one was quite sprightly- possibly missing his usual fare.

Local wildlife parks have been alerted.

What have you seen and photographed recently? If you send a photo to Dave Verrall at:      dave.verrall@weyarun.org.uk he can upload it to the Wildlife Photo section on the website.
