Rooks Hill - Bridge deck pour completed

A major milestone was achieved at Rooks Hill in February with the concrete pour to form the bridge deck.

Work has progressed on the wing walls with further brick and block laying.  Infilling between these wing walls continues.  Alongside work on the bridge, a lot of progress has been made with the groundworks to form the canal channel to the south of the bridge. The video featured in the article below provides a great round-up of all the work taking place as we push to complete phase I of the project by this summer.

Rooks Hill the Movie !

Steve Court travels the country showcasing and filming canal restorations.   His YouTube channel with over 37,000 subscribers features a new video on the work at Rooks Hill.  Filming took place last week so you can see all the most recent progress.

Working Party News

Thanks to the efforts of our Grants Administrator, Caroline Roberts, the Trust now has an Iseki TM3267 Tractor and Flail which was 75% funded by Loxwood Parish Council.

Six volunteers attended a training and familiarisation session at Wiltshires, Dunsfold who supplied the tractor and flail.  With its narrow width, the tractor can access most of our towpaths.  This will make the maintenance of the canal side far easier and quicker.

The winter months are a busy time for maintenance on and along the canal.  Tree damage from recent storms has to be cleared up and the canal bed dredged ready for the start of boat trips.

The Northern working party recently assisted in clearing a fallen tree near Birch Copse.  The lighter branches were removed using our workboat May Upton but the Mid Week Working Party required a winch to remove the trunk - a two day job.

Over the winter, the Dredger Group have removed about 100 cubic metres of spoil from the canal bed.  The good news is that trip boats can now access Baldwin's Knob Lock and use its winding hole to turn and return to the Canal Centre.

Spring Wildlife

Canalside wildlife photos are in short supply this month so here is a seasonal one of mad March hares.  We look forward to contributions from any keen photographers for the April edition.

What have you seen and photographed recently? If you send a photo to Dave Verrall he will upload it to the  Wildlife photo section on the website.  dave.verrall@weyarun.org.uk
