Rooks Hill Bricklaying Ceremony and Open Morning
Saturday 18th April was a special day at Rooks Hill , where we were able to say thank you to our members and supporters who have made this restoration project possible and to our volunteers who have carried out all the design and construction work.

We also welcomed Sir Jeremy Hunt MP who kindly joined us to lay special bricks to recognise the contribution of the two individuals who made this project possible and the support of Bramley Councillor, Jane Austin.   Without John Compton who  kindly sold the Trust the land, and Martin Foster who left us a generous legacy, this project would not have been possible.

Our members were able to follow the route the canal will take from the restored canal in Birtley down to the site of the new Rooks Hill bridge and have an escorted tour to see the progress on the bridge and canal channel.

Our Appeal total has now passed £233,000 leaving us just under £20,000 to fully fund phase I of this project which we expect to complete this summer.

Working Party News

The Thursday Group have continued work on the Thriscutt Slipway infilling the trench across the ramp with concrete and raising the hight of the drainage inspection chambers with addition courses of bricks.

Dredger Pauline has been manoeuvred onto her cradle on the slipway (a challenge!).  The rams in her Spud Legs have been removed and sent away for repair.

The hedge laying season has come to an end with the very long hedge at Drungewick finally completed.  At Rooks Hill the team has laid about 260 metres of hedge requiring over 500 stakes for support.  All the material used is locally sourced, saving considerable sums of money.

The workshop at Tickners Depot has had some attention to the gable end.  A good thing as there has been plenty of activity inside.  The concrete mixer was so encrusted its wheels would not turn and the engine would not start.  It is now receiving some much needed TLC.
