What has the Trust achieved?

We have come a long way since the canal restoration started – 10 locks restored and one new lock built; 17 bridges restored and two new ones built; 2 aqueducts reconstructed; over half the canal worked on and 3½ miles fully restored at Loxwood to enable public trip boats to operate.

But there is a huge amount still to be done and WACT is determined that the canal will be completed. In the past, the Trust mainly focused on one major project at a time but a multi-site strategy has been adopted to accelerate the restoration project. In 2016, work was being carried out on Compasses Bridge and the Summit Level, on Gennets Bridge Lock and on Bramley Link Phase One, with various smaller schemes also being progressed.

You can help in many ways. Although our volunteers provide much of the effort, funding is required for materials, contractors and professional planners and engineers. Income from Memberships, regular and one-off donations, legacies, boat trips and sales all mean that the work can continue and one day the whole canal will be open once again. We hope you can help.

Make sure you make the most of Gift Aid

The Wey & Arun Canal Trust benefits significantly from the Government’s Gift Aid scheme adding 25% to donations and subscriptions from UK tax payers.

What is Gift Aid?

Gift Aid is a simple way to increase the value of your gift to WACT - at no extra cost to you. If you pay tax in the UK, WACT can reclaim the basic rate tax (25%) on your gift. So, if you donate £100, it is worth £125 to WACT.

Do I qualify for Gift Aid?

In order for WACT to reclaim the tax you have paid on your donations, you must have paid income or capital gains tax (in the UK) for each tax year (6 April to 5 April) at least equal to the tax that all the charities or Community Amateur Sports Clubs that you donate to will reclaim on your gifts for that tax year. Other taxes such as VAT and Council Tax do not qualify.

Membership & Gift Aid

If you are a member who is covered by Gift Aid but have not yet registered, please download a declaration form (click here). Print it out, fill in your details and send it to the Membership Secretary at the Trust’s Loxwood office.

Gift Aid on donated goods

The Trust can also receive Gift Aid on items donated to be sold on its behalf, on eBay or at auction for example. We will claim on the amount WACT receives for the item. A special agreement form is required for this (click here to download). All future donations of goods will be covered once you have returned it to the Trust. We will contact you after the sale to inform you how much your donation was sold for and confirm that you are happy with the money going to the Trust.
