June Headlines:

We are gearing up for a busy summer at Rooks Hill.  The dry weather is a good time for restoration work, but means we have a shortage of water in the canal impacting our boat trips.

Pre-construction work has started at the Rooks Hill Bridge site and the site compound established.   Visiting work groups will help our own volunteers over the summer to ensure we can make some rapid progress.  We will provide regular updates as this very significant project moves forward.

Our appeal has got off to a good start and a big thank you to our members and supporters who have already made a donation.

Boat Trips

Unfortunately the recent dry spell means that we have currently suspended boat trips as there is insufficient water in the navigable section of the canal.

A rainy period would mean the clouds have a silver lining   - at least for us!

Working Party News

Phase 1 of the Rye Farm project to construct a new bridleway is now 85% complete. The final stretch involves a ramp where the new bridleway rises over the tree line to join the existing bridleway. Here it is necessary to install cellular tree root protection.

Over a ton of donated clay has been puddled into the bank next to the overspill on the Drungewick pound.  See Zoe our apprentice in action.

Re-grouting of the walls of Baldwin's Knob lock is now complete - a long and not very exciting but very necessary task.

The relative lack of rain does not seem to have restricted the growth of vegetation!

Three May Upton boatloads of cuttings were pruned between the Drungewick slipway and Baldwin's Knob Lock.

Mobile Display Vehicle

The Mobile Display Vehicle will be visiting:

Cranleigh Carnival on 28th June.

Parnham Steam Rally on 12th and 13th July.

Weald Fesr Billingshurst on 19th July.

 Poddle Report

This year's Poddle took place on June 1st and over 100 walkers enjoyed some lovely weather.  The route  included part of the Loxwood section and the restored canal inside Dunsfold Park Aerodrome which is not normally open to the public.

Donations are still coming in so we don't have a total on the amount of money raised to report at this time.

A big thank you to Chris Tavener and his organising team for putting on such a well run event. Thanks as well of course to all those who participated and to those who sponsored a walker.

Young Volunteers at Loxwood

We recently hosted a group of students and teachers from New Barn School,  Broadbridge Heath.   New Barn is a specialist school for young people with autism. Over five weeks a variety of jobs were completed including planting and weeding outside the Canal Centre,  building a new display stand and washing down paintwork at Brewhurst Lock.   On the final Friday the group enjoyed a short boat trip.   Following the volunteering sessions,  Gordon Powell, one of our Directors attended a school assembly and the school has chosen us as their local charity for the next school year.
