Rooks Hill - Progress continues on the bridge and culvert

After two weeks of intensive activity in July with visiting Waterway Recovery Group and Newbury Working Group work camps, our own volunteers have continued the good progress. Excavations for two of the bridge wing walls have been completed and the first of three concrete pours is scheduled for this week.

A short distance from the bridge is a culvert that runs below the canal.   The culvert has been extended and a new outfall built to allow the bank to be built up in this area.   With the blockwork complete, bricklaying has now begun.

Rooks Hill Appeal

Our appeal total has now passed £135,000 which is ensuring we can continue to make good progress, but  we still have a long way to go to reach our target of £286,000.

We are working hard on reducing the costs and hope to have some good news to share soon on support from suppliers and local businesses that should reduce the funding gap we still need to close.

Can you help us ?

No Boat Trips, so time for Painting

Unfortunately the recent dry spell means that we have currently suspended boat trips as there is insufficient water in the navigable section of the canal.

However the lovely summer is not been wasted!  Members of the Boat Group and the Mid Week Working Party have been repainting the Fleet. This is The Wiggenholt resplendent in her new finery.

Working Party News

Phase 1 of the Rye Farm bridleway/towpath is now complete and very fine it looks too.  Work on Phase 2 is planned to start in September when the trees obstructing the route north will have been removed.

The landing stage just downstream of Baldwin's knob Lock was in very poor condition and unstable.  The Thursday Group have completely dismantled the structure and replaced the pilings with Plastecowood posts and bearer beams. It is now safe and sound with its new decking boards.
