Rooks Hill - Brickwork underway, Bridge Deck next

Fantastic progress continues at Rooks Hill, with brick and block laying now taking place to form the wing walls and to cover the concrete abutments.

Large "Legato" blocks are being used to form part of the canal bank around the bridge and to protect a steep bank above the culvert south of the bridge.  The first of these blocks measuring 1.8 X 0.6 x 0.6 metres have been delivered and positioned.   Concrete will be poured between the two layers to form a strong vertical bank with stone filled Gabion cages installed on top.

Next up on the schedule, is the installation of scaffolding which will provide a platform to continue brickwork on the wing walls to the support the formwork for the bridge deck.

Rooks Hill Appeal

Our appeal total has now passed £159,000 as generous donors continue to contribute.

Bricklaying has begun on the bridge with the 12,000 bricks which have been donated by Wienerberger and valued at £11,000 included the appeal total.

Cost savings of £21,000 have also been identified,  meaning we now need a further £106,000 to fully fund phase 1.

Can you help us by donating or organising a fundraising event ?

Volunteers needed now !

The ongoing restoration of our canal depends entirely on our volunteers.  There are a wide range of activities from hands on work on the canal itself, maintenance of our extensive range of machinery to administrative roles in fund raising, publicity and organising events.  It provides opportunities to learn new skills and meet people with a wide range of experience.

Can you help and do you know of others who might like to be involved?

Email volunteering@weyarun.org.uk to get more information and to arrange a conversation to discuss how to get started.

Working Party News

Thanks to a DEFRA Grant, the Tracmaster Power Scythe mentioned in last month's Newsletter now has a big brother.  This is not only more powerful and self-propelled but has chipping, flail-mower and stump grinding attachments - all great for maintaining our increasing stretches of towpath.

The Monday group paid a visit to Malham and Newbridge.   Malham Lock was very overgrown, but was looking a lot better following their visit.

Mobile Display Vehicle

Last month, the MDV attended the Surrey Hills Wood Fair where the 'Drive a Digger' was a popular attraction.

During the Spring and Summer, the MDV featured at 13 local events covering a total of 18 days.  Our thanks to all who made this possible.  It is a key part of our publicity and a vital source of new members.

Autumn Wildlife

This Grey Heron almost looks as if it is posing for Julian Morgan at Shalford.

What have you seen and photographed recently? If you send a photo to Dave Verrall who will upload it to the  Wildlife photo section on the website.  dave.verrall@weyarun.org.uk
