Rooks Hill - Brickwork progressing, Bridge Deck next

Fantastic progress continues at Rooks Hill, with brick and block laying now taking place to form the wing walls and to cover the concrete abutments.

More of the Large "Legato" Blocks have been positioned to form part of the canal bank around the bridge and to protect a steep bank above the culvert south of the bridge.  Concrete will be poured between the two layers to form a strong vertical bank with stone filled Gabion cages installed on top.

Scaffolding has been installed to provide a platform to continue brickwork on the wing walls and  to the support the formwork for the bridge deck which is now being prepared on site.

Rooks Hill Appeal

Our appeal total has now passed £192,000 as very generous donors continue to contribute.

Bricklaying is progressing on the bridge with the 12,000 bricks which have been donated by Wienerberger and valued at £11,000 included the appeal total.

Further cost savings have been identified bringing the expected costs down to £253k,  meaning another £60k is required to fully fund phase 1.

Can you help us by donating or organising a fundraising event ?

AGM

This year's AGM was held on the 18th October in Shalford Village Hall.

During the morning, Alan Johnson led a fascinating walk around the most northerly section of the canal. His comprehensive knowledge of the early railways in the area left us far better informed about the industrial development of this part of Surrey.

There was a good turnout of members with the hall pretty well full to capacity.  After the formal business was concluded, Bill Nicholson gave a comprehensive presentation on the exciting progress being made at Rooks Hill.  Outgoing Directors Julian Morgan and Dennis Gillen were presented with gifts to thank them for their long service.

Volunteers needed now !

The ongoing restoration of our canal depends entirely on our volunteers.  There are a wide range of activities from hands on work on the canal itself, maintenance of our extensive range of machinery to administrative roles in fund raising, publicity and organising events.  It provides opportunities to learn new skills and meet people with a wide range of experience.

Can you help and do you know of others who might like to be involved?

Email volunteering@weyarun.org.uk to get more information and to arrange a conversation to discuss how to get started.

Working Party News

Sally our 13 Ton tracked excavator is now back in action after her major engine overhaul.  During the dry summer the trucks delivering the Legato blocks to Rooks hill were able to unload them directly into their final position.  However, now the wet weather has arrived, access is restricted to tracked vehicles. So Sally was required to install the last 10 blocks.

The new Tracmaster flail mower is now in action and more than earning its keep. Towpath clearance that would have taken a day was completed by coffee time!

This machine is going to make a major contribution to keeping our ever increasing stretches of Towpath clear and open for walkers and cyclists to enjoy.

Your Canal Companion

Did you know you can download an app to your iphone with detailed information on our canal.  This includes canal side features such as mileposts, benches, picnic sites, landing stages and walks.

There are also details of past and current restoration projects.  This makes the app an excellent source of information available during a walk.

Further details and instructions on downloading the app can be found via the button below.
