Rooks Hill - Abutment brickwork completed

Fantastic progress continues at Rooks Hill, with the brickwork on the bridge abutments completed.  The scaffold poles between the abutments will support the bridge deck formwork.  Steel arches have arrived on site and formwork is being prepared so the steels and formwork can be put in place in January.  When completed the steel arches will be hidden under brickwork. .

Concrete has also been poured between the Large "Legato" Blocks  which form part of the canal bank around the bridge and to protect a steep bank above the culvert south of the bridge. Gabion cages have been positioned and stone filling will start next week. .

Rooks Hill Appeal

Our appeal total has now passed £195,000 as very generous donors continue to contribute.

Bricklaying is progressing on the bridge with the 12,000 bricks which have been donated by Wienerberger and valued at £11,000 included the appeal total.

Further cost savings have been identified bringing the expected costs down to £253k,  meaning another £57.7k is required to fully fund phase 1.

Can you help us reach our appeal total ?

Last week the sandbagging to edge the path was completed and now a final stone surface will be laid.

The path will be completed in January and a new route opened up to the public.

More details to follow.

Christmas comes early to the Canal

Our  Santa Trips have been taking place on weekends in December and the final trip will take place on  Monday 22nd.  All the remaining trips have sold out!

We have also had a visit from the Martlet Kayak Club who hold their annual Christmas Paddle on our canal.

A huge thank you to all our volunteers who have run and organised the Santa Trips. Behind the scenes a lot of work takes place to decorate the trip boat, the Canal Centre and outside along the canal.  Catering needs to be organised,  presents bought and wrapped.

Our Santas and Efls were brilliant along with the Boat Group who crew the trips.

Christmas Cards and 2026 Calendar

Our 2026 Calendar features stunning photographs of the canal across the year.   It is a large (A4 size) wall calendar. One page for each month with a large box for each date

Oliver Lake has kindly produced a new design again this year for our Christmas Card.

Both are on sale in the Loxwood Canal Centre but you can also order on-line.

Working Party News

The hedgelaying team have now completed the very long stretch beside the towpath running upstream from Drungewick Aqueduct.  This has taken two winter seasons plus a few weeks this year.

Over the last fortnight the team have cut around 320 stakes and binders from a hazel wood at Devil's Hole.  These will be good for about 140 metres of hedge and will be used for the next major hedgelaying task at Rooks Hill.

This winter the dredger group are planning to clear the large amount of silt south of Baldwin's Knob lock caused by flooding of the river Lox last winter.  The aim is to allow trip boats access to the BKL winding hole next summer.

Running repairs were required to Pauline's aft spud leg and more maintenance will be required to the port spud leg at the end of the dredging season.

Your Canal Companion

Did you know you can download an app to your iphone with detailed information on our canal.  This includes canal side features such as mileposts, benches, picnic sites, landing stages and walks.

There are also details of past and current restoration projects.  This makes the app an excellent source of information available during a walk.

Further details and instructions on downloading the app can be found via the button below.

Autumn Wildlife

There was a shortage of new wild life photos this month so here is a seasonal one. There are no doubt plenty of robins about in the vicinity of the canal and the boat group report multiple sightings of  kingfishers near Devil's Hole.

What have you seen and photographed recently? If you send a photo to Dave Verrall who will upload it to the  Wildlife photo section on the website.  dave.verrall@weyarun.org.uk
