Rooks Hill - Scaffolding ready for bridge deck formwork

Fantastic progress continues at Rooks Hill, with the brickwork on the bridge abutments completed.  The scaffold poles between the abutments will support the bridge deck formwork and additional scaffolding erected to safely position it.   Steel arches have arrived on site and formwork is being prepared so the steels and formwork can be put in place in January with the aim to pour the concrete deck in February.   When completed the steel arches will be hidden under brickwork. .

South of the bridge,  good progress has been made on the canal bank with volunteers positioning and filling the gabion baskets on top the concrete blocks.

Rooks Hill Appeal

Our appeal total has now passed £195,000 as very generous donors continue to contribute.

Bricklaying is progressing on the bridge with the 12,000 bricks which have been donated by Wienerberger and valued at £11,000 included the appeal total.

Further cost savings have been identified bringing the expected costs down to £253k,  meaning another £57k is required to fully fund phase 1.

Can you help us reach our appeal total ?

Working Party News

As you can see the Eric Walker Group entered into the Christmas Spirit which attracted much favourable comment from the passing public!

But it is not all play.  As highlighted above they have now completed laying the base for Phase 2 of the towpath extension by laying some 350 sandbags of dry mix concrete.

The hedge layers have been busy at Rooks Hill and the first section has been laid from the bridge worksite almost as far as the site of Fanes Bridge lock.

The Loxwood car park had deveiped an impressive array of potholes (potlakes morelike).  The Monday Group have improved the situation no end with a few still to fill.

Water, water everywhere.....

It is either feast or famine as far as canal water is concerned.  After the heavy rainfall on 11th December the river Lox overflowed into the canal.  Unfortuately it will have brought with it a large amount if silt.  So even more toil in the New Year for Pauline and her hard-working crew.

It would have been more helpful to have had some of this water in the summer!

BBC Morning Live

On 7th January, the BBC featured the Newberry Working Party affiliated to the Waterway Recovery Group working at the Rooks hill site.

The feature was looking at Volunteering Holidays as a great way to travel to new locations,  get involved in community projects, learn new skills and make new friends.    What's stopping you !
