May Headlines:

Strong progress on Rooks Hill Phase 1 continues, and we are gearing up for Phase 2 with a successful funding application giving us a major boost.

Our boat trip season is well underway - tickets for our cream tea cruises have sold out but tickets for other cruises and our Father's Day specials are still available.

Our annual sponsored walk previously known as 'The Poddle' takes place on June 7th and registration is open on our website.

Rooks Hill Phase 1 - earthworks nearing completion
Earth and bank works south of the new bridge are nearing completion.   Gabion cages have been positioned and filled by the bridge and then back filled.  Base stone has been laid on the route of the towpath on the east bank.  The section of "soft" bank detail is now complete on the east bank.   An access route is still open on the east bank and this will be filled in with more interlocking blocks in due course.

Bricklaying on the bridge continues.  The brickwork around the bridge arch is complete and the parapet wall is rising steadily.
Rooks Hill Funding Success and Appeal Update

The application we made to Waverley District Council to receive Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) funding has been approved and will provide 80% of the money we need to fund phase 2 of the Rooks Hill Project.

Phase 2 will create a new canal cut and towpath north of the bridge to join up with the restored Birtley section.

While the CIL award is fantastic news, we are still just under £22,000 short of our Phase 1 target and need to raise a further £62,400 to fund the remaining 20% of Phase 2.

CIL requirements, mean we need to spend the money before we can reclaim 80% of the costs, making it even more important we can achieve full funding.

We are therefore expanding our Rooks Hill Appeal to target a further £84,000 of donations to complete Phase 1 and Phase 2.   Please donate if you can.

Working Party News

With the recent spell of dry weather, our various working parties have made excellent progress on their many diverse projects.  Not such good news for the Boat Group!

The Midweek Working Party have been clearing the banks and removing tree trunks from the canal bed at Alfold Road.

The new Tracmaster is proving useful but was unable to digest some barbed wire lurking amongst the brambles.  Our trusty Depot team were able to remove and ensure al is now back in working order.

The Northern Working Party resolved a problem with the lock at Loxwood where one of the upper lock gates would not fully close.  After installing stop planks, they were able to remove the offending piece of wood which was jamming the gate open.

Spring Wildlife

James Giles, a local photographer, took this amazing photo of a Long Horned Beetle alongside the canal.

What have you seen and photographed recently? If you send a photo to Dave Verrall he will upload it to the  Wildlife photo section on the website.  dave.verrall@weyarun.org.uk
