August Headlines:

You can see all the excellent progress at  Rooks Hill by watching a great "fly-over" video taken by Robin Gardner, one of our working group volunteers.

At southern end of the canal, an archaeological dig has taken place at Pallingham to learn more about the docks that used to operate there.

Rooks Hill - more progress on Phase 1 and Phase 2
The final section of interlocking blocks on the south side of the bridge are now in place closing off the access track into the canal.  On the right of the photo above, you can see the coping stones which will be placed on the bridge parapet walls when they are complete.

Work on Phase 2 (see photo below) has got off to a great start thanks to two visiting work groups who have installed  gabion cages and Plastecowood Posts to form the east bank.
Rooks Hill Fly-over

To appreciate the all the work completed and planned, take a look at a drone video taken by Robin Gardner.  The video starts over the southern site of the lock to be built in Phase 3 and takes you north over the work completed as part of Phase 1 including the new bridge.  It then continues north where you will see the start of bank works in Phase 2.

Pallingham Dig

With the kind support of the landowner, an archaeological survey and dig took place in Pallingham this month. The photo shows some of the remaining stonework from the dry dock.  The results and finds are being written-up and further information on what we found will be shared with our members in the October Wey-South Magazine.  The work was funded with a donation from the Sussex Ouse Restoration Trust.

Guided Walks - September

Alan Johnson will be leading two guided canal/railway walks on the Sunday afternoons of 13th and 20th September.  Details of the walks can be found on our Website.  These dates coincide with the Heritage Open Days 2026 and have already attracted members of the Surrey Industrial History Group.

The northerly walk on the 13th September follows the same itinerary as the one which preceded last year's AGM and which was absolutely fascinating.

Working Party News

It is difficult to remember there was a lot of rain and flooding during the winter.  The Thursday Group have taken the opportunity of the current over-dry weather to clean out the accumulated sludge and silt from the Lordings Waterwheel chamber and cut back the overgrowing weeds.

They also gave the picnic bench by the Lordings Flood Lock some TLC.

The Northern Working Party have continued with groundworks for the temporary road at Tickner's Road Bridge prior to the site being mothballed pending recommencement of the project.

At Tickners Depot, the canteen roof is now waterproof - although it has yet to be proof tested!  Mark Feeny was tasked to build a cage to protect the new pump at Balwin's Knob Lock from passing boat traffic.  Made of steel channel, it weighs in at 250Kg.  After galvanising it will be installed in the canal over the pump.
