The Trust benefited recently from several corporate volunteer days, in which employees left their day jobs to help out with the canal’s work.
Pharmaceutical company Sanofi, which has offices in Guildford, sent 42 staff members to Hunt Park Nature Reserve in Shalford. Their tasks ranged from helping to remove invasive, non-native plant species that can take over canal banks, to maintaining footpaths and painting fences.
Employees from investment firms based in London swapped the city for the fresh air of the West Sussex countryside this month to help the Wey & Arun Canal Trust.
Under the supervision of canal workers Dave Evans and Kev Baker 12 volunteers from Newton Investment Management (IM) and BNY Mellon spent a day painting the lock furniture at Brewhurst Lock and erecting fencing and gate posts.
Organiser Alan Wright from Newton IM said it was great team building exercise. “It’s a win win for everyone as the team get a worthwhile and enjoyable day away from the office and the Trust benefits from their efforts and also receives a donation from the company.”
