We might all be spending a lot more time at home thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, but there's no shortage of canal-related diversions to keep members occupied safely inside.
With more time on our hands, now is the perfect opportunity to catch up on some reading. The Trust website has a range of books on sale, from the Guide to Restoration Progress on the Wey & Arun Canal to the recently updated Visiting the Wey & Arun Canal, allowing you to chart the restoration of the canal or plan the next site to visit when it's safe to do so. The historical The Thames to the Solent by JB Dashwood is also on sale, along with PAL Vine's The Wey & Arun Junction Canal, offering a glimpse into the bygone era of the waterway. For those happy relaxing in front of the TV, now is the perfect opportunity to watch 'The Lost Wey to the Sea', in which Trust member Tony Pratt sets out in his collapsible boat 'Frog', to retrace the diaried account of the aforementioned Victorian yachtsman J B Dashwood, rediscovering the epic 1867 voyage along the Wey and Arun Canal system. DVDs are available to buy here: https://weyarun.org.uk/shop/18-dvds.
Tony has also created an informative and entertaining website based around the River Arun and its valley, complete with video footage and historical background. The Arun Valley Postcard Trail started as the title for a series of short documentary films based around Tony's collection of cards built up over the years and has led to a project with professional video maker Jerry Laurence, using drone footage to complement Tony's pieces to camera. The Wey & Arun Canal is included under other places to explore. Go to: www.avpct.co.uk.
