In what is thought to be a first for an independent canal restoration group, the Wey & Arun Canal Trust is looking to take on a Water Environment Worker apprentice.

The Trust is offering this new Level 3 (A Level) apprenticeship to someone keen to forge a career in waterway restoration at a time when it is embarking on a number of exciting new projects. The applicant needs to enjoy working out of doors, be a team player happy to work with Trust employees, contractors and volunteers, and be willing to learn new skills. A clean driving licence is also required.

The recruit will be primarily based at the major project at Tickners Heath in Surrey, where they will help guide teams of volunteers building two new bridges and canal channel there, along with carrying out a wide range of waterway and environmental projects along the length of the canal. They will also be expected to look after the health and safety of themselves and others on site.

The 18-month apprenticeship includes on-the-job and online training, alongside two weeks training delivered by Bridgwater and Taunton College.
